How is social media changing the way audiences watch TV?

Join us for a Twitter chat Thursday, June 12, at noon EDT with Univision’s head of social media, David Beck MBA ’06. Beck will answer your questions and provide insights into social TV—the use of social media alongside television programming to promote engagement.

Beck, who was named Latin TV Marketer of the Year in 2013, leads the award-winning social media team at Univision, which holds 73 percent of the television market for Hispanic America. Beck has gained industry notoriety for Univision’s enterprising use of social media during its programming while being on the forefront of social TV.

“We’re leveraging social to become part of the content experience,” Beck told Social Media Today of Univision’s social media-supported programming.

Beck and his team have created a social TV experience for Univision’s biggest programs, like using Google Hangouts to let fans chat with stars at the Latin Grammys or utilizing Twitter to crowd source questions for award winners at

Univision’s youth awards show, Premios Juventud.

Slated to be a record-breaking social media event, Beck and Univision’s next big social TV event is the 2014 World Cup, which starts June 12. Among other efforts, Univision plans to source content from Facebook fans for use during World Cup broadcasts across its channels.

“We want to give our fans a live experience and a more engaging experience, wherever they are. We know they are interacting live during the broadcasting of these shows and we want to pull all of that rich content and integrate it into the broadcast itself,” Beck told The Hollywood Reporter.

In the #MITAlum chat, Beck will tweet about social media, social TV, and what to expect from this year’s World Cup. Join us at noon and submit your questions for Beck with the hashtag #MITAlum.

This event is co-sponsored by the Tufts Alumni Association and the MIT Alumni Association.
